Two characters, Jenny, the new cook, and Charlotte, the lady of the house, share opinions on food, health, gardening and marriage. Cecily O'Neill, the writer, said: "Food is always cropping up in Austen's work and correspondence. Mrs Bennet uses it to impress her social circle, Emma administers soft-boiled eggs to her father, and a betrayed Marianne Dashwood refuses it all together. It was clearly both a pleasure for her and a way in which she could subtly and wittily indicate both status and character in her books." Nothing could be further from the truth. Focusing on a bright yellow dress on display in the Beyond the Bonnets exhibition, Dr Alex Walker, from Hampshire Wardrobe, will explain how Regency England loved colour and how they created the bright yellow dyes which were so popular at the time. Alex will also explore the relationship between the yellow dress and the lady’s maid who would be responsible for caring for the garment, ensuring it was ready to be worn by her mistress. This is an opportunity to see Regency clothing in a different way. Venue's website: arcwinchester.org.uk Venue's Facebook: facebook.com/arcwinch ![]() |
