Law Week Festival 2025: Miss Austen Investigates Saturday 18 October 2025
Venue:  Winchester Cathedral     map Categories   Books  •  Talk
Address:   Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 9LS
Telephone:  01962 857275 (box office)
Event:  Law Week Festival 2025: Miss Austen Investigates - 7.30pm - Join Jessica Bull, as she explores these themes through her ‘Miss Austen Investigates’ novels. Jane Austen’s “criminal mind,” while not literally criminal, refers to her insightful understanding and portrayal of societal ills and the darker aspects of human behaviour within her novels. While her stories often focus on love and social etiquette, they also explore themes of betrayal, deception, and the consequences of immoral actions. Join Jessica Bull, as she explores these themes through her ‘Miss Austen Investigates’ novels. Find out how her teenage love of Austen led her down a rabbit hole that would eventually inspire her to write stories where our favourite literary icon takes on a whole new role. Insightful, quirky and entertaining!

Event:  THE YELLOW DRESS – REGENCY FASHION AS SEEN FROM THE LADY’S MAID’S POINT OF VIEW - A talk with Dr. Alex Walker - 7.30pm - We often assume that people in the past wore dull colours, devoid of pattern, trimmings, and flourishes. Nothing could be further from the truth. Focusing on a bright yellow dress on display in the Beyond the Bonnets exhibition, Dr Alex Walker, from Hampshire Wardrobe, will explain how Regency England loved colour and how they created the bright yellow dyes which were so popular at the time. Alex will also explore the relationship between the yellow dress and the lady’s maid who would be responsible for caring for the garment, ensuring it was ready to be worn by her mistress. This is an opportunity to see Regency clothing in a different way.
