Venue: Theatre Royal map ![]() Address: Jewry Street, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 8SB Telephone: Box office: 01962 840440 Event: University of Winchester: Earthquakes in London - 7.30pm - University of Winchester BA Acting programme Earthquakes in London By Mike Bartlett Final Year BA Acting students take on Bartlett's epic play, first staged in 2010 at the National Theatre. Driven by an all-pervasive fear of the future and a guilty pleasure in the excesses of the present, the play takes us on a journey from 1968 to 2525 and back again. Described as a 'fast and furious metropolitan crash of people, scenes and decades,' it moves deftly between the personal and political as we encounter three sisters trying to navigate their ‘lives and loves as their dysfunctional father, a brilliant scientist, predicts global catastrophe’.* The form juxtaposes naturalist dialogue with dream-like visions, on a journey through chaos that leaves us with uncertainty and hope… Whilst it's, perhaps, impossible for the form of a play to adequately capture the scale and urgency of climate change, Bartlett's work offers an ambitious and adrenaline-fuelled theatrical ride that opens up a range of urgent contemporary issues. Given it's forward-looking time line to 2525, the play is perhaps, even more resonant now than when it first appeared in 2010. Through this programme, we will be highlighting the work of eight talented writers and eight directors as they collaborate to develop a monologue or duologue. Each writer will create an original piece, and each director will work alongside their assigned writer to bring the script to life. These collaborations will culminate in a scratch night giving you the chance to experience new writing from the local area. After the performances, we will select one play as the winner, providing the chosen piece with further support for its development. Don't miss out on this celebration of new writing and talent! He examines his own ethnic and religious background. And thinks twice about the very core of his identity as a voice of reason. Is everything a big lie? Chair Yoga? Cauliflower as a main course? Yes. Yes. Yes. And Yes. No current idiocy is left un-examined. With a highly developed sense of the ridiculous, and proper comedy bones, Not Himself, is a testament to the healing power of humour. And the joy of jokes.
