Venue: Theatre Royal map ![]() Address: Jewry Street, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 8SB Telephone: Box office: 01962 840440 Event: University of Winchester: Earthquakes in London - 7.30pm - University of Winchester BA Acting programme Earthquakes in London By Mike Bartlett Final Year BA Acting students take on Bartlett's epic play, first staged in 2010 at the National Theatre. Driven by an all-pervasive fear of the future and a guilty pleasure in the excesses of the present, the play takes us on a journey from 1968 to 2525 and back again. Described as a 'fast and furious metropolitan crash of people, scenes and decades,' it moves deftly between the personal and political as we encounter three sisters trying to navigate their ‘lives and loves as their dysfunctional father, a brilliant scientist, predicts global catastrophe’.* The form juxtaposes naturalist dialogue with dream-like visions, on a journey through chaos that leaves us with uncertainty and hope… Whilst it's, perhaps, impossible for the form of a play to adequately capture the scale and urgency of climate change, Bartlett's work offers an ambitious and adrenaline-fuelled theatrical ride that opens up a range of urgent contemporary issues. Given it's forward-looking time line to 2525, the play is perhaps, even more resonant now than when it first appeared in 2010. It connected with wider audiences and secured her a place on the UK touring circuit. After the release of her celebrated album, Ellie has continued to firmly root herself in the songwriting scene. However this time, her new music amplifies her writing; referencing the more contemporary sounds of MIPSO and JeffBuckley. After a heavy year of touring away from home, themes of absence, push/pull, and longing emerge from this new and exciting direction. DAN WALSH
Venue: Hyde Tavern
Doors 7.30pm, start 8pm
BBC Folk Awards ‘Best Musician’ nominee Dan Walsh combines ‘virtuoso playing and winning songwriting’ (MORNING STAR). Describing what Dan does is no easy task but at the heart of it is British, Irish and American folk music delivered with a healthy dose of funky grooves – all performed with his unique and dazzling take on clawhammer style banjo helping to challenge all preconceptions about the instrument. Add to all that poignant songs, astonishing musical departures and lively humour and the result is a truly memorable live show which has wowed audiences across the world from intimate seated rooms to huge dancing crowds in festival fields.
