His current solo act knits together voice, bass and looper around a collection of darkly funny songs about the insanities of modern life. These are often minimal and absurdist - his seven word, 30 second Message to the Future was a finalist in the 2018 International Songwriting Competition - and weave in elements of blues, jazz and folk, drawing on a 30+ year career as a musician in which he has performed and recorded with, for example, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Evan Parker, Nancy Kerr, Jon Boden & many others. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it. Trailblazing musical partnerships with, amongst others, Steeleye Span, Dave Swarbrick and his award-winning wife (Norma Waterson) and daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums, but Martin has only recorded 10 solo albums, of which the much anticipated Waiting for Angels (Topic TSCD527) was the latest. Whether in the folk clubs (which he continues to champion), on the concert stage or making TV appearances there are few roles that Martin Carthy hasn't played. He's a ballad singer, a ground-breaking acoustic and electric-guitarist and an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material. He always prefers to follow an insatiable musical curiosity rather than cash in on his unrivalled position. Venue: Whitchurch Parish Hall Address: 28 London Road, Whitchurch, Hampshire, RG28 7LQ Event: Whitchurch Folk Club: The Wilderness Yet - 8pm - Taking their name from a Gerard Manley Hopkins classic, this Sheffield-based trio fuse the clear, charismatic vocals of former BBC Young Folk Award finalist Rosie Hodgson with the fine, sensitive fiddling of Rowan Piggott and the deft guitar and flute playing of Philippe Barnes. Independently, they have earned audiences' esteem as consummate musicians; together, they weave an eclectic tapestry of traditional and original songs and tunes; from a cappella three-part harmonies to luscious instrumental arrangements. Their eponymous debut album was released in 2020 to critical acclaim, closely followed by a short EP of commissioned covers called John O Dreams. Lockdown saw them record a winter album / show called Turn The Year Round, featuring secular re-writes of classic carols and carefully arranged seasonal favourites.
