Event:  WINCHESTER FESTIVAL: OPENING CONCERT - 8pm - Winchester Cathedral Chamber Choir, making its debut at the Festival, presents a concert of Iberian-themed choral music. Featuring guitarist Joseph Ingle, the programme includes 20th Century Spanish composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Romancero Gitano, with its settings of poems by Lorca evoking the landscapes, people and culture of Andalucia. Alongside this will be masterpieces by composers from Spain and Portugal, and music that emerged from their New World colonies in the 16th and 17th Centuries, fusing the culmination of late Renaissance European music with indigenous and Creole influences.

Event:  WINCHESTER FESTIVAL: WESSEX SINFONIETTA - 7.30pm - The Wessex Sinfonietta is one of Hampshire's leading chamber orchestras. This evening's concert includes Weber's Horn Concertino, a virtuosic piece which includes four-part chords and explores the extremes of the instrument's range. Christopher McKay is a former Hampshire Young Musician winner, now forging a successful professional career. The concert will open with the rich colours of Brahms' St. Anthony Variations, a work performed too infrequently, and close with Beethoven's Symphony No.7, one of his most exhilarating works, described by Wagner as ‘the apotheosis of the dance'.

Studies have taken him to the International Academy of Musical Excellence in Graz with a performance in Vienna as well as learning from Les Siècles and François-Xavier Roth in the Hector Berlioz European Youth Orchestra. From St Petersburg, Irina has given many recitals in international venues and at the Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall and the Southbank Centre.

Event:  WINCHESTER FESTIVAL: LUNCHTIME RECITAL - 1pm - British pianist George Rowley is quickly establishing himself as one of the most exciting young musicians in the country. A graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and more recently the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, George is currently undertaking a year of postgraduate study at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest as a result of winning the Weingarten Scholarship in 2018. George returns to the Festival after a very successful recital in the lunchtime series in 2014.

Event:  WINCHESTER FESTIVAL: CASTALIAN QUARTET - 8pm - In a world full of fine ensembles, the Castalian Quartet has been noted as ‘the new force to be reckoned with'. This is reflected in demand from festivals worldwide, and in the numerous awards the ensemble has won. They bring their special talent to the delightful ambience of St Cross Church in a programme focused on the early decades of the string quartet genre. Haydn is considered as the creator of the form, influencing the next generation of composers, among them Fanny Mendelssohn, whose only quartet will be played, and Beethoven, who wrote the Razumovsky quartets for the Russian ambassador in Vienna.

Lisa is from North Wales; she was a frequent competitor in the National Eisteddfod and a member of a traditional Welsh folk song choir. She now sings with six-strong soprano ensemble, Castor Voices.

Event:  WINCHESTER FESTIVAL: TALLIS SCHOLARS - 8pm - Over four decades of performance, Peter Phillips and The Tallis Scholars have done more than any other group to ensure that sacred vocal music of the Renaissance has not fallen out of the repertoire of concerts across the world. This fine programme draws on the richness of music at the Sistine Chapel, which was not solely a treasure trove of visual art. Allegri's ‘Miserere' was jealously guarded by Vatican powers, but there was much more than that heard within those famous walls. Palestrina set many versions of the Mass, some of which provide the framework of this concert, where the Italian Renaissance will come to the Gothic nave of Winchester Cathedral.
