Event:  WINCHESTER FESTIVAL OPENING CONCERT - 8pm - Southern Voices make a welcome return to the Festival with the intensely spiritual music of Rachmaninov’s Vespers. Originally conceived as part of the Orthodox all-night liturgy, and based on ancient chants, this sequence of music works very well in its concert form. The Cathedral is an ideal setting, where the stones have resonated for centuries with rich choral colours.

In 2014 Mud's new album, For Pops, recorded in tribute to his late father, saw him make a very personal statement about his roots. Winchester Folk Club opened its doors in the Attic of The Railway in May 2010, its first night playing host to none other than Martin Simpson. The club presents top national and international acts from the world of folk music. In its short history it has boasted an impressive list of guest artists, including Jim Moray, Lau, Martin Carthy and Chris Wood. The aim is to put on a varied billing of shows which hosts established names, alongside introducing exciting new and up-and-coming acts. The monthly singarounds at the Hyde Tavern are free, informal evenings where everyone gets together for a drink, and to sing a song or play a piece of music. Now armed with a solo show and her performances are receiving much attention. The audience are taken on quite some musical journey of sounds via her MPC 2000 drum machine, looper, Fender electric guitar, plus an array of effects to go alongside her soulful vocals. The experience is simply spellbinding. The songs sound unlike anything heard before. In many cases they are songs you would want to sing along with. Her style could be defined somewhere within Dream Folk and Alternative Indie Pop. However, Sylva Kay offers something new and different amongst these comparisons. Her work is sung from the heart and very musical.
