Saturday 04 June 2011 -- EVENT HAS PASSED
Venue: Winchester Cathedral map Address: Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 9LS Telephone: 01962 857275 (box office) Event: Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra: Mozart’s Requiem - Performing R Strauss' Death and Transfiguration and Wagner's Music for 'Good Friday' from 'Parsifal', with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Sarah-Jane Brandon (soprano), Daniela Lehner (alto), James Oxley (tenor) and Owen Gilhooly (baritone); conducted by David Hill. This concert features the most emotional of musical outputs on the subject of death and the transition into the afterlife. Strauss' Death and Transfiguration tells of a dying man's memories of the great loves of his past. Wagner's Good Friday Spell is one of the most beautiful depictions of nature in music, describing Parsifal's homecoming with the Holy Spear only to find that King Titurel has died shortly before. Mozart's Requiem is surrounded by an air of mystery owing to the composer's death before the piece was completed. It is a predominantly choral work with stunning vocal choral parts, complemented by solo singers and, of course, the Orchestra. Tickets: £36, £32, £26, £16, £10, £6 Concessions available for: Children (16 or under) Full-time students (in person only with valid proof of ID) Income support recipients (in person only with valid proof of ID) Wheelchair users One companion per wheelchair user Book all three Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra concerts and enjoy a 20% discount on ticket prices (not available online) Please call the box office. 01962 857275 |

Friday 10 June 2011 -- EVENT HAS PASSED
Venue: Winchester Cathedral map Address: Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 9LS Telephone: 01962 857275 (box office) Event: Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra: Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade - Buy tickets online at www.winchester-cathedral.org.uk or contact the box office at boxoffice@winchester-cathedral.org.uk or 01962 857275. Performing Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, Bax's Tintagel, Delius' Walk to the Paradise Garden and Bruch's Violin Concerto, with Alexandra Soumm (violin); conducted by Rui Pinheiro. Premiered by the then Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra under Sir Dan Godfrey in 1921, Bax's tone poem Tintagel evokes "the castle-crowned cliff of Tintagel Castle and the wide distances of the Atlantic as seen from the cliffs of Cornwall on a sunny but not windless summer day". Delius's Walk to the Paradise Garden is an entr'acte from the opera A Village Romeo And Juliet and describes the tragic beauty of mortality in an overwhelming texture of sound. Bruch's lyrical and ebullient Violin Concerto and Rimsky-Korsakov's big-scale Scheherazade are two of the most classical pieces of all time and hardly need any introducing! Tickets: £36, £32, £26, £16, £10, £6. 7.30pm. |

John Wellington Wells, the celebrated dealer in "magic and spells", spreads chaos and havoc in an unsuspecting country village, when he places a powerful aphrodisiac in the village hall teapot. The resulting revelations are indeed "a marvellous illusion, a terrible surprise!" Opera della Luna have earned themselves a matchless reputation, now celebrating 15 years of acclaimed productions of Gilbert and Sullivan, Offenbach and Johann Strauss touring to theatres all over the UK. Their recent productions of Die Fledermaus and HMS Pinafore played to sell-out houses and gained rave reviews. |
