The Titanic Survivors started life long ago in 1979. Initially the line up was Chris Packham, Simon Olden, Gordon McGregor and brother Graham McGregor. Simon soon left to join Southampton punks Strate Jacket, and Chris became the TV Presenter. Their first gig was July 1981 at the Solent Suite in Southampton and more gigs followed at Club Manhattan and The Joiners in those early days. The band are mostly influenced by early 70's like Pink Floyd, glam rockers TRex, Rush. Classic punk bands The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Vibrators, The Buzzcocks, Dr Feelgood, Motorhead and The Damned...and in between that lot classic blues from Rory Gallagher...an unlikely combination! The 60 minute recitals will feature a wonderful eclectic mix of popular British choral favourites including famous works by Stanford, Rutter, Jenkins, and Chilcott this May. John Rutter's rousing 'Wells Jubilate' will feature alongside Bob Chilcott's highly original 'Jazz Mass'; an outstanding collection of anthems by a wealth of living British Composers; sacred songs from Karl Jenkins' famous 'Armed Man' 'Requiem' & Stabat Mater'. Concluding the programme will be Charles Stanford's 'Te Deum in Bb' known worldwide having been used at the Coronation Service for King Edward VII in 1902 and every subsequent Coronation since. All three composers had successful careers writing for the opera house and their settings of traditional Latin texts for the church are no less vivid. Powerful choruses and soaring solo lines are supported by rich orchestrations. Bizet had composition lessons from Gounod whilst Poulenc, a devout Catholic, owes more to Stravinsky and jazz in his syncopated version of Gloria in excelsis Deo.
