Winchester Folk Club opened its doors in the Attic of The Railway in May 2010, its first night playing host to none other than Martin Simpson. The club presents top national and international acts from the world of folk music. In its short history it has boasted an impressive list of guest artists, including Jim Moray, Lau, Martin Carthy and Chris Wood. The aim is to put on a varied billing of shows which hosts established names, alongside introducing exciting new and up-and-coming acts. The monthly singarounds at the Hyde Tavern are free, informal evenings where everyone gets together for a drink, and to sing a song or play a piece of music. Sandy Walker and Andy Broad stared working together in early 2010 to work on a couple of songs that Sandy wanted to perform at the regular jam that Andy was hosting. The jam went very well, so they decided to keep working together, this time Sandy brought along some lyrics she had been working on, Andy immediately found a chord progression that fitted. It quickly became evident that there was a lot more going on here than just a few blues standards, Sandy is a prolific lyricist with a good ear for melody and harmony and Andy has a wealth of chordal and rhythmic ideas. Sandy soon threw her piano playing skills into the pot to add yet more spice to the mix. Sandy's roots are more folky with an interest in jazz whilst Andy is an established Blues performer also with a side line in Jazz. The resulting original music is a unique blend of all three, with lively latin inspired foot tappers and jazz tinged ballads and a couple of out an out bluesers, every song with it's own story. As well as song writing they have a keen interest in performing of course, their live set includes an ever changing selection of their own songs plus a few blues and jazz standards, and one or two traditional folk numbers. @walkerbroad |

Composed when he was just 22 as his graduation exercise from the Istituto Musicale Pacini, it was not performed again until the 1950s. This will be its first performance by Winchester Music Club. In the first half of the concert, the orchestra will perform two other works that came from the ‘springtime' of their composers' lives: Mendelssohn's Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream, composed when he was only 16, and Richard Strauss's First Horn Concerto, written at the age of 18. Five-time Olivier Award winner Imelda Staunton (The Crown) joins forces with her real-life daughter Bessie Carter (Bridgerton) for the very first time, playing mother and daughter in Bernard Shaw’s incendiary moral classic. Vivie Warren is a woman ahead of her time. Her mother, however, is a product of that old patriarchal order. Exploiting it has earned Mrs. Warren a fortune – but at what cost? Filmed live from the West End, this new production reunites Staunton with director Dominic Cooke (Follies, Good), exploring the clash between morality and independence, traditions and progress.
