Charity Jazz: Howard Alden + Karen Sharp with Simon Woolf & Steve Brown
Start time: 8pm
Stroke victim, Dave Nicholson, on behalf of the Basingstoke Stroke Support Group, is presenting another of Charity Jazz evenings on Monday 9 May at the Irish Centre. The truly great American guitarist Howard Alden appeared at the Irish Centre a couple of years ago, sharing the bill with Jim Mullen and others. Now Dave would like to invite you to hear Howard with Karen Sharp (known for her years with the Humphrey Lyttleton Band) on tenor sax, Simon Woolf on bass and Steve Brown on drums. Howard was a Concorde Records recording artist for many years and is particularly known for working often with Ruby Braff: he was Ruby's favourite guitarist, they could musically read each other's minds. There is a wonderful DVD available on the Storyville label of them working together in a trio format with Frank Tate on bass at the Brecon Jazz Festival in 1991, highly recommended. Plenty of material is to be found on the web featuring Howard if you have the time to browse. Both Simon Woolf and Steve Brown also worked with Ruby Braff on various occasions.
