Venue: Hyde Tavern map Address: 57 Hyde Street, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 7DY Telephone: 01962 862592 Event: MANOS PUESTAS TRIO - 7.30pm doors - Manos Puestas Trio are a UK based group playing Gypsy Jazz, Be-bop, Latin and Rumba. Comprising 2 guitars, vocals and double bass, the Trio has many years experience between them, and all members have played throughout Europe including Montreux Jazz, WOMAD and Glastonbury Festivals. Re-interpreting jazz standards in a different style, Jon Lewis and Matt Sullivan play guitar with a Flamenco technique – that’s right, not a plectrum to be seen! This brings a unique feel to the tunes, particularly those of Django Reinhardt, Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk. In 2014, Matt Watson of Oxford based Cuban big-band Ran Kan Kan joined them on double bass and vocals, enhancing the Latin feel and leaving lots of room for improvisation and up-beat danceable rhythms. Venue: Hyde Tavern map Address: 57 Hyde Street, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 7DY Telephone: 01962 862592 Event: RICK FOOT - 7.30pm doors - Double bassist Rick Foot has been making too much of the wrong kind of sense for longer than he cares to remember. His current solo act knits together voice, bass and looper around a collection of darkly funny songs about the insanities of modern life. These are often minimal and absurdist - his seven word, 30 second Message to the Future was a finalist in the 2018 International Songwriting Competition - and weave in elements of blues, jazz and folk, drawing on a 30+ year career as a musician in which he has performed and recorded with, for example, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Evan Parker, Nancy Kerr, Jon Boden & many others. Saturday 10 February 2024
Venue: Hyde Tavern map Address: 57 Hyde Street, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 7DY Telephone: 01962 862592 Event: MARTIN CARTHY - 7.30pm - For more than 50 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music's greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it. Trailblazing musical partnerships with, amongst others, Steeleye Span, Dave Swarbrick and his award-winning wife (Norma Waterson) and daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums, but Martin has only recorded 10 solo albums, of which the much anticipated Waiting for Angels (Topic TSCD527) was the latest. Whether in the folk clubs (which he continues to champion), on the concert stage or making TV appearances there are few roles that Martin Carthy hasn't played. He's a ballad singer, a ground-breaking acoustic and electric-guitarist and an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material. He always prefers to follow an insatiable musical curiosity rather than cash in on his unrivalled position. Venue: Hyde Tavern map Address: 57 Hyde Street, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 7DY Telephone: 01962 862592 Event: LOUIS BRENNAN - 7.30pm - London-based Dubliner Louis Brennan is a singer-songwriter in the folk tradition. His folk however aren’t the field hands and travelling minstrels of yore but the repressed middle managers and ennui-ridden urbanites of late-stage capitalism. They populate tales of bad sex, half-drunk commutes and interpersonal claustrophobia delivered in Brennan’s cracked baritone, at times embarrassingly intimate, at times spuriously broad, peppered with pitch-black humour. Venue: Hyde Tavern map Address: 57 Hyde Street, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 7DY Telephone: 01962 862592 Event: CHRISTINA MARTIN - 7.30pm - Christina Martin is a powerhouse musician, songsmith, and performer hailing from the windswept East Coast of Canada. Her music dances effortlessly through Pop, Rock, Folk and Americana traditions but stays deftly unchained by any one label, unafraid to venture into stranger waters. From her Austin-inflected 2002 debut Pretty Things, to the sweeping cinematic dreamscape of 2018’s Impossible to Hold, Martin is an artist who is constantly shifting, and constantly evolving. And like all her material, the latest album Storm boasts a backbone of raw honesty about the human condition. Be they personal confessions or narrative tales, each song is lovingly crafted, and hits in the heart like a well-thrown punch. With a string-drenched new album and a run of iconic music videos available in 2023, Christina will travel overseas to perform, accompanied by co-producer and guitarist Dale Murray. This is an album, and a tour, not to be missed. Hyde Tavern website: hydetavern.co.uk Hyde Tavern on Facebook: facebook.com/thehydetavern ![]() ![]() |
