Nielsen and Beethoven
Start time: 7.30pm
Beethoven's 9th is one of the best known works of the classical repertoire and the first example of a major composer using voices in a symphony. The first performance in 1824 was conducted by the stone-deaf Beethoven and was an immediate success. It has remained so ever since, especially the rousing fourth movement setting of Schiller's Ode to Joy – a celebration of the brotherhood and unity of all mankind. This has been used in many different contexts, perhaps the most famous being its adoption as the 'Anthem of Europe' by what is now the European Union. Tickets: £35, £30, £25, £15, £12 and £5 available online from the Cathedral Box Office on 01962 857 275
