It is hard to imagine that any music could be associated with John Henry Newman's famous poem, The Dream of Gerontius other than the music of Sir Edward Elgar and those who have set a number of his verses as hymns. This new setting can be described as a sacred melodrama as it features two actors as Gerontius and the Guardian Angel; the contribution from the a cappella choir is confined to the choruses of Assistants, Demons and Angelicals. These choruses throw the spotlight on to the conversation between the soul and his angel.
