Winchester Music Club Spring Concert - Haydn: 'Paukenmesse', Mozart: Symphony no. 40
Start time: 7.30pm
Sun 24/03/13 7:30 pm Eleanor Gregory – soprano Catherine Backhouse – mezzo soprano Richard Dowling – tenor Christopher Foster – bass Winchester Music Club Winchester Music Club Orchestra Brian Howells – leader Nicholas Wilks – conductor The 'Paukenmesse' or Missa in Tempore Belli (Mass in Time of War) is Haydn's tenth mass, nicknamed the Paukenmesse or Kettledrum Mass due to the inclusion of timpani in the orchestration. It was written in 1796 when the Austrian army was faring badly against the post-revolutionary French in both Germany and Italy and fearing invasion. The mass is initially joyful and lyrical, characteristics shared with the contemporaneous Creation; the unsettling effect of the political situation is manifest musically in the latter parts: the Benedictus and Agnus Dei. Mozart's Symphony no. 40 in G minor comes from a particularly creative period in Mozart's life: in a few weeks of 1788 he wrote the three symphonies 39, 40 and 41. It is one of the most popular symphonies of any composer and many might remember the Waldo de los Rios arrangement of the first movement that made the Top Ten in the early 70s. £18/£12 in advance, £20/£14 on the door.
