Britten's stunning War Requiem was first performed 50 years ago, composed for the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral following the destruction of the original during the infamous Luftwaffe raid on the city in November 1940. Given complete freedom over the text, Britten, a conscientious objector, chose to intersperse the Latin Mass for the Dead with nine of the First World War poems of Wilfred Owen, producing a powerful indictment of war.
