Their 2012 'French Connection' features three colourful examples of sacred repertoire from the mid-19th century and the late 20th. All three composers had successful careers writing for the opera house and their settings of traditional Latin texts for the church are no less vivid. Powerful choruses and soaring solo lines are supported by rich orchestrations. Bizet had composition lessons from Gounod whilst Poulenc, a devout Catholic, owes more to Stravinsky and jazz in his syncopated version of Gloria in excelsis Deo.
