Verdi: Requiem, Cole: I Died for Beauty
Start time: 7.30pm
Winchester Music Club presents Verdi's thrillingly operatic Requiem. From the truly terrifying Dies Irae to the angelic Agnus Dei, it is an experience not to be missed. On this occasion the Club will be joined by Winchester College Glee Club and quiristers and Winchester Music Club orchestra. Although an immediate success after its first performances in Milan in 1874, the Requiem nevertheless aroused controversy due to its theatrical nature and Verdi's agnosticism. Hans von Bülow described it as 'Verdi's latest opera, in clerical vestments' which caused Brahms to respond 'Bülow has made an ass of himself: Verdi's Requiem is a work of genius'. Whether you consider Von Bülow's comment a compliment or an insult, the term operatic is certainly an apt reflection of the work. With its huge emotional and dynamic range, Verdi's Requiem can only be fully appreciated in live performance. In addition, there will be the first performance of promising young composer William Cole's 'I Died for Beauty', a short work specially commissioned by Winchester Music Club. Tickets: £30.00, £20.00, £15.00 and £5.00. Tickets available soon from www.winchester-cathedral.org.uk or contact the box office at boxoffice@winchester-cathedral.org.uk or 01962 857275.
