Performing John Tavener's The Protecting Veil, JS Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.3 and Shostakovich's Chamber Symphony Op.110a, with Jesper Svedberg (cello) and Clio Gould (violin); directed by Clio Gould. JS Bach's tour de force that is Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 is a display of each musician's mastery of their instrument. The Chamber Symphony Op. 110a is an arrangement of Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 8 by the late Rudolf Barshai, former Principal Conductor of the BSO. John Tavener captures, in his own words, "the almost cosmic power of the Mother of God" in his concerto for cello and string orchestra, The Protecting Veil. Tavener uses Byzantine tones to picture different aspects of Mary's life and sainthood, with the solo cello representing her voice.
